Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, meaning “Grass-Cutting Sword,” is one of the Three Imperial Regalia of Japan and holds deep mythological and cultural significance. According to legend, the storm god Susanoo discovered the sword in the tail of the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, and later presented it to his sister, the sun goddess Amaterasu. The sword earned its name when the warrior Yamato Takeru used it to cut through burning grass and escape a trap, showcasing its divine origin and protective power. Often associated with bravery and rightful rule, Kusanagi is traditionally enshrined at the Atsuta Shrine and remains a potent symbol of the Japanese imperial lineage.
